Ten Things of Thankful #13

I’ve been really neglecting my Crafting Blog recently – http://kat-craftingwiththenightowl.blogspot.co.uk – this is both through continuous illness, and the fact that I’ve been using it for my TToT posts, so I decided to move this to my writing Blog here, so that I’ll be forced to use my other Blog in the way it was meant for – well, that’s the plan, anyway! 🙂

To continue with this post – It’s been another of those weeks, this week – in fact, I only realised it was Saturday already, because Lizzi’s TToT post came up on my Bloglovin’ thingy (I’m so technical, aren’t I? {grin})

Anyway, despite a week of little sleep, and hubby being very ill, I’m determined to keep on with my weekly TToT so, for this week’s selection, here goes:

I’m thankful, once again, for antibiotics! Bob started the week with a really bad cold, which rapidly developed into one of the worse chest infections he’s had to date, barring the pleurisy he had recently! Fortunately, we still had a whole course of antibiotics left over from that, so he started to take them, and he’s now 85% better (his figure, bless him!) 🙂

I’m thankful for our close friend who ran errands for us while Bob was down, as he needed cough medicine, and all the other stuff needed when a virus hits!

I’m so very thankful that he’s getting well again, as we had one scary night when I didn’t dare sleep, as his breathing was so bad I thought it might stop! Yay for the antibiotics once more! 🙂 (Just to let you know, I wanted to call in the doctor, or get an ambulance – but Bob wouldn’t have it! He was convinced he was dying – even though I kept telling him he wasn’t –  and he was determined to do it in his own home! Men! Lol)

I’m thankful for my crochet work, which kept me occupied while I kept watch over my poor ailing hubby! Lol

I’m thankful that I didn’t catch this virus full-blown! With my compromised immune system, it would have been serious – fortunately, I’ve just got a sore throat and bunged-up nose! Whew!

I’m thankful for kitchen paper, and soft toilet paper! We ran out of tissues early on, so thank God for modern conveniences! Lol

I’m so very thankful that I stayed well enough to care for the Carer! We’re both quite stubborn types, and hate to ask for help if we can do it ourselves, and so I was able to do what I could without calling on anybody else – apart from the bit of shopping – which pleased us both! I know! We’re stubborn, and baulky, and daft not to ask for outside help – but I guess we both come from that old-school tradition that keeps us going, rather than giving in! Lol

I’m thankful for Hall’s Mentholyptus, Olbus Oil, and Jakemans Throat & Chest lozenges – all of which helped Bob to breathe, and are now helping to soothe my poor throat!

I’m thankful for instant meals – without which we would have starved this week! 🙂

I’m thankful that we reached the end of this week with Bob so much better, and myself still able to cope! 🙂

So, there’s my current TToT, and I hope we don’t have too many weeks like this one has been! 🙂

    Hi Katy!
It’s nice to meet you! I love your blog because we have a few things in common. I am a retired crocheter (I have been reading more often and don’t foresee picking up my needle again so I have a lot of wasted yarn!) I love to read short stories, poems, and novels (more novels than anything else). I’m happy your husband Bob is getting better. I know how much I depend on my husband! I’ve had bronchitis and plurosy in the past and neither one of those are easy to get through! I know how thankful you must be for your friends helping you all out. Whenever we were in need, our church family stepped in and brought meals or anything else we needed. My husband and I are also very stubborn and do not like to ask for help either. I’m happy to hear you were able to avoid getting sick! When I first wrote my TToT, I was thinking of writing about toilet paper too! Good minds think alike! Have a blessed night!

    • Hi Rachel, and thanks for your comment – it’s nice to hear from someone who actually likes what I’ve written {grin}

By the way, yarn is NEVER wasted – and you can never have enough of it, either! Lol

It’s a pity you’ve retired your crochet hooks, as there’s a never-ending list of projects to be done (I’ll need to live to be 1,000 to complete my present list!)

I, too, love reading, as anyone who knows me is certainly aware of. As you can see by my blog, I love writing, and reading, poetry and short stories, but my favourite thing is reading novels – preferably serials, and definitely sci-fi & fantasy – especially if it involves dragons, or unicorns, such as the late Anne McCaffrey wrote so well about! 🙂

Unfortunately, with all the crochet work I’m doing, I’m unable to keep up with as much reading as I used to do – I’d think nothing of reading a book a day!

Now it’s more like a fictional book a fortnight, although I read some of my bible every day – and I don’t feel right unless I’ve read at least a few scriptures before I can settle down to sleep 🙂

All I can say is a big OUCH where your recent ill health is concerned – Bronchitis AND Pleurisy! Thank heavens your husband looked after you so well 🙂

We had lots of offers from friends and spiritual family in the food line but, to be honest, we’re both such finicky eaters, it was better that we did our own food – there’s nothing worse than to waste something lovingly prepared by a friend, that we couldn’t eat – and we hate wasting food with a vengeance!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks toilet paper so essential that I had to list it in my TToT! Lol

I’m also looking forward to seeing your future posts, too 🙂

  4. What a week you’ve had, Katy! Seems so early in the season for so much sickness to be going around already. Next time your husband plays the Little Spartan Boy, tell him you’d much rather he died at the hospital, as it would be less paperwork for you. But all kidding aside, I’m glad he’s better and that you didn’t catch the full-blown version from him.

    Have a quiet, HEALTHY week!

    • Hi Dyanne 🙂

He’s feeling about 90% better now, so he says and, apart from a hacking cough that has as much to do with him being a smoker, as it does the virus, he’s a lot better now, and is waiting for better weather to be able to get out of the house again 🙂

      I hadn’t thought about the paperwork – it gives me something to tease him about, next time he’s ill, bless him! {grin}

I do hope you keep virus free, Hun – take care of yourself, also, with all these viruses around 🙂

  5. Sounds like a week of illness and modern medicine! My wife works in a pharmacy and brings home every virus known to man. She never gets sick, but lives by the philosophy, “Tis better to give than receive.” Yep, I end up the sick one. Your hubby sounds like be when I had my heart attack. My wife finds me on the bathroom floor and proclaims she needs to call 911. I respond, “No! I’ll be okay. We don’t have the money right now!” Lucky for me she didn’t listen. Good post!

  6. I am so sorry you had such a terrible week. Taking care of a sick husband is no fun, especially when it is an illness which makes him cough and have trouble breathing. I know that one night you stayed up to keep an eye on him had to have been scary, your description made me laugh. “He was convinced he was dying” but wanted to die at home? The logic of sick men baffles me.

I hope your head cold doesn’t get as bad as his did. I know how awful even just a cold can be when you have a weakened immune system. I have (early, early) Lupus, but when I start to get a cold, that Lupus flares something awful.

I’m sure your friend was happy to go to the store for you. I used to be the same as you, hating to ask for help. Until I thought about it from a different perspective. When someone I know is struggling through a difficult situation, I desperately want to help that person. When/If the person finally asks me for help, I am relived and thrilled that she asked. I know my friends feel the same way. Why not ask them??

Praying you are on the mend…

    • Awwww, thank you Christine 🙂

Yes, Lupus was my latest diagnosis (2011) to add to the rest of it, so I’m expecting some comeback from the present cold – but I figure that, by the time it really punches in, my Bob will be well enough to keep an eye on me again – at least our bodies are taking it in turns! 🙂

As for accepting help – I guess we’ve got used to being the ones that do the helping, rather than receiving it – it’s something we’ll have to work on as we get older, I suppose! :/

{{{{{Christine}}}}} Hugs for you, too 🙂

  7. “…and he was determined to do it in his own home! ”

( I gotta go with him on this one, makes sense.)

But good to hear that the medicine is doing what it is supposed to do and getting things to a level that the body’s own systems can deal with an infection like you describe.
Be careful your-own-self, not to get too run down, keep your own immune system robust and resistant.

I’m a totally weird one, me. My immune system is on the blink and yet, when there are really bad colds and flu around, I get as I’ve got right now – a head cold and sore throat!
I reckon a virus doesn’t stand a chance with all that’s wrong with me – queuing room only, please! Lol

    • They’ve truly been a life-saver for us this week – and a real treat in a way, as we usually prefer to cook from scratch, rather than have processed food – the change has been as good as a rest, as the saying goes 🙂

You’ll be a very welcome visitor to my Crafting Blog – the more, the merrier! 🙂

I’ve been seriously neglectful of it recently – I’ve not stopped crafting, but I haven’t been posting about it as I promised myself I would! I’m going to have to rectify that, as soon as I get rid of this head cold! Lol

  10. I, too, am thankful for antibiotics. For my mom had a swollen gland this week with a low grade fever. She went to the doctor and got antibiotics and sure enough is on the mend now. So very thankful for that for sure and very glad to hear that it helped Bob, too this week!!:)

  11. I’m glad you and your husband are doing better. Antibiotics are indeed great! I’ve had a really bad bronchitis recently, needing 2 courses of antibiotics, and I’m so glad I had them. We definitely need to be thankful to live in a country where medication and medical care are readily available if we need them.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and despite all a great weekend!

      Ouch! Poor you 😦

As a child living in London, I used to get Bronchitis so regularly, my mum knew when the weather was changing by it – I remember the terrible hacking cough I’d have with it, and being unable to catch my breath at times, so you have every bit of my sympathy – I really hope the antibiotics have done their job well for you!

Yes, we can be really thankful to live in a country where there is still free health care when needed! 🙂 quickly for you

  12. OH man….I hate it when my husband is sick too. Mine has been sick for the past three weeks. Two visits to the doctor, a round of antibiotics, three different kinds of cough medicine. He’s better but oh…the not sleeping at night is the worst.

SO glad to hear that your husband is better and that you didn’t catch it full-blown!

    Have a great week-end!

Poor you, having to nurse your hubby for so long through it all – I thought it was bad enough just for one week!

My Bob is much better today, although the cough’s taking it’s time to shift – but I’ve now got a full-blown head cold! 😦

I don’t know – the things we put up with for love! 🙂
