Ten Things of Thankful # 17

Mum on her 70th Birthday, 2009

What a difference a week makes!

This week has been full of terrible lows, when our family truly thought we’d lose Mum, and then amazing highs, as she turned a corner, and so very quickly came back to us.

My 10 things of thankful are dedicated to this:

  • I thank God that my Mum has survived, and is now on the road to recovery
  • I thank the doctors and nurses, once more, for their exemplary care where Mum was concerned. They battled long and hard to bring her back from the brink of death, and their fight was well worth it, as Mum suddenly turned a corner, and has made a rapid recovery so far πŸ™‚
  • I’m thankful for all the support I’ve had from family and friends, and the concern and good wishes everybody sent us all over this awful time.
  • I’m thankful for the prayers made by so many people all across the world – and I’m totally convinced this helped in my Mum’s recovery – Mum was so very touched by this, when I told her πŸ™‚
  • I’m thankful that Dad will have his love home with him very soon, as he’s not coped well without her πŸ™‚
  • I’m thankful that Mum has survived to share another wedding anniversary with Dad. They will be married for 58 years on 27th of this month πŸ™‚
  • I’m so very, very thankful that I was able to talk to Mum on the phone yesterday. I have to admit I sobbed my heart out with the relief of it all once we’d finished talking! πŸ™‚
  • I’m also so very thankful to Alexander Fleming, who discovered the antibiotic uses of Penicillin in 1928. I’m so very much aware that, without it, neither myself, nor my Mum, would be here now!
  • I’m thankful for living at a time where all of this was possible!
  • I’m thankful, lastly, Β for living where there is a free National Health Service still. There are many people all over the world who lose their lives, needlessly, because they have no access to a free health service, and I’m very much aware of how fortunate I am to live in a country where we have this. There is a huge amount of criticism for our poor, benighted services but, when it really counts, they are there for us, as they have been for me, since my birth πŸ™‚

Thank you all, so very much, for your messages of concern for me over this last week. I appreciate it, and was comforted to know that you cared so much πŸ™‚

All we wait for now is for mum to have her kidney removed, if it’s possible, but are making the most of this waiting time to let Mum know how much we love her because, as so many of us know, love can be a great healer πŸ™‚

  2. Hi Katy… you have been quiet for a while. I hope this does not indicate bad news and that all is well with you. Oh, and that you have not been washed away by all this rain!

    • Hi there Jan – thank you for thinking of me πŸ™‚

Unfortunately I’m going through a bad patch with the old arthritis and ME, and only have the energy to quickly check on my emails and messages, so my blogs have been sadly neglected for the moment – though I’m hoping to get back to them as soon as I can πŸ™‚

We’re really fortunate that our home is built on a high area, 1.5 miles south of Aberaeron, so, apart from our stream going from a trickle to a torrent, and our woodland becoming mired in mud, we’ve got that, and a field, between us and the water, so we’re coping okay, thanks πŸ™‚

Hope things are okay for you, too? πŸ™‚

  3. Alexander!!! yeah! way to go historical-fgure-having-a-brief-moment-of-enhanced-reality dude!
seriously, it is so good to see the outcome be such a good one, especially with the way the path was forming last weekend. That speaks volumes to this online reality, where we come to care about people and their lives, people we would have never encountered in a million years were it not for the common interest in a sharing in a forum like this. ( yeah!!! Lizzi!! for having creating a unique little corner of the blgosphere)

    • I’m with you there, Clark, both with Alexander Fleming, and also with Lizzi, who made this amazing World rapport possible πŸ™‚

Mum has a serious op to face in January but, in the meantime, we’re taking each day as it comes, and enjoying her company, whether it’s being there with her or, like myself, on the phone or on Skype!

  4. I am so relieved to hear your mum is doing better! I didn’t get through all the TToT’s last week, but Lizzi sent me a message about you, and I have prayed for her. And you. So many of us wouldn’t be here without the miracle of modern medicine – add me to that list! I hope this next week just gets better and better for you. Isn’t Brex due for a visit soon, or did I miss it?

    • And your prayers have been greatly appreciated, and I totally believe they’ve been answered πŸ™‚
Mum sends her thanks to everyone who has been praying for her, as she knows she needed every bit of help she could get πŸ™‚
There’s an op in January, to remove her kidney, but we’ll all just be enjoying this present time with her as much as we can – which means me phoning her every day, and getting my brother to set up her Skype connection, once again, so we can at least see each other then! πŸ™‚

Mum has to go back in January to have the kidney with the tumour removed, but our whole family are just so relieved to have Mum home for these next few weeks, that we’re going to face this other problem when it happens πŸ™‚

  6. Oh Katy, it’s so good to read that your mum turned a corner with her health and is doing okay now. It must have been such an emotionally draining week for you. How wonderful that they are about to celebrate 58 years of marriage! I will keep her in my prayers (and I will put in a good word for Mr Fleming while I’m there!)

    • Believe me, Lizzi, I’m almost giddy with happiness that she’s recovering as well as she is πŸ™‚
Unfortunately, I learned earlier this evening that she has to go back into hospital in January – they are going to remove the kidney with the tumour on, so I guess we’ll all be frantically praying once more for her 😦

But, until then, we’re all making the most of the time she has at home – well, for me it’s being able to phone her as often as I like – but my siblings are doing their best to spoil her rotten πŸ™‚

Okay, okay, but we can do that – let us know and we’ll all join in again. January’s a way off yet. And hopefully the tumour removal will be a Good Thing, even though there’ll be the stress of the op.

I’m glad you get to phone her whenever you like, and oh I wish so much you could see her too! But I’m just so pleased she’s recovering. What a relief πŸ™‚ Hang on in there, my friend, and we’ll all be right behind you, hoping and praying that things go well with her.

      • Thank you, my dear, I will do, especially with the support I’ve been getting here, from my virtual TToT family πŸ™‚

Your support means a lot to me, along with everyone else here who have wished Mum well πŸ™‚

She sends her thanks for that support, and the prayers and best wishes πŸ™‚

Mum’s still very, very weak, but she’s gaining strength every day, and so appreciates the fact that people are praying for her πŸ™‚

The internet flusters her, so she hasn’t gone online but once, but she asked me to thank everyone, as she’s sure it’s helping her recovery πŸ™‚
